A Study on Psychotherapeutic Drama for Psychiatric Practice

Abstract
Psychodrama had been used for psychiatric treatment by Moreno in 1921, which was a modality in group therapy. Psychodrama had been contributed to psychiatric therapy by many Moreno¡¯s co-workers since then.
The theory of psychodrama was introduced in Korea in 1950, but it was not used at clinical practices at all. I attempted to the therapeutic approach by means of three patterns of psychodrama during 28 months, from September, 1973 to December, 1976, and this was the first use to therapeutic approach in Korea.
I expected that psychotherapeutic drama would bring the positive effectiveness to psychiatric therapy. Psychotherapeutic drama was played on 28 sessions, the subjects comprised 70 females and 44 males. The assessment of psychotherapeutic drama can be illustrated as follows:
The attitude of patient to psychotherapeutic drama was positive.
At the early phase of hospitalization, most patients took interest in psychodrama in which patients participated as the protagonist or actor. At the middle phase, they concerned about psychodrama designed for psychotherapeutic drama. At the later phase of treatment, they were interested in the radical theatre played by a dramatic company.
Although the treatment mechanism was difficult to be evaluated by only factor, I found tat the psychotherapeutic drama had value in accordance with Moreno¡¯s assertion, especially it was more valuable for the young age group and most appropriate time of session was 15~20 minutes, The result of patient improvement or deterioration was not related only by mean of psychotherapeutic drama ; nevertheless, I conclude that psychotherapeutic drama as ancillary therapy has value to therapeutic milieu in psychiatry.
